Wastewater treatment refers to the process used in removing contaminants from sewage or wastewater to make it more useful to people and less harmful to the environment. Through this process, there is the establishment of an environmentally friendly water cycle (Sun et al., 2019). It is therefore, important to know the term to make us understand the processes that are involved in wastewater treatment. An example of sewage water treatment may include conventional wastewater treatment, such as primary treatment, secondary treatment, and pretreatment.
The term affects living things, including human beings, in various ways. Wastewater treatment is advantageous to human beings because it leads to a reduction in environmental pollution, which improves their health. This is through the reduction of disposing of waste products into the atmosphere. Wastewater treatment specifically reduces the susceptibility of human beings to contracting such water-related diseases as diarrhea and typhoid (Raimi et al., 2017). For our physical environment, wastewater treatment maintains a clean hydrological cycle, as it reduces the accumulation of toxic materials into the water cycle. For instance, wastewater, which occurs in sewages, always has an unpleasant smell, which can be hazardous to human health (Katheresan et al., 2018). To maintain a clean hydrological cycle, such water must be treated.
The clear and specific actions that my friends and I can take in promoting of environmental sustainability in relation to wastewater treatment include coming up with a project on the sewage treatment plant and setting up septic tanks in areas with large amounts of sewage water discharge. A project on sewage water treatment will ensure that there is little contamination of the environment, while a septic tank will provide an excellent drainage system for the sewage water. By so doing, our environment will be safeguarded through the prevention of both air and water pollution.
