Analysis Paper **5 -7 pages plus Works Cited English Education Majors: Add an Appendix (see below) The purpose of Essay 1 is to investigate the critical possibilities of young adult literature. To that end, you will be connecting three key concepts: 1. adolescent identity formation, 2. critical literacy, and 3.social justice. A major requirement of this essay is research. You must find no fewer than ***THREE academic sources for your paper. You may count the Bean/Moni article as one source (see below). Avoid websites, Wikipedia, dictionary.com, etc. ** Instead, use the databases available via library. Peer -reviewed resources are mandatory. Also, use MLA, 8th edition correctly. ***Make sure yourthesis makes an argument. Procedure: 1. Select a young adult book. It cannot be one on our assigned reading list. You may, however, use one of our books to supplement the analysis. If such a pairing is used, each book must be used equally. 2. Read and use Bean and Moni’s “Developing Students’ Critical Literacy: Exploring Identity Construction in Young Adult Fiction.” This should be used to establish the connection between identity formation and young adult literature. 3. Also, use the Bean/Moni article to answer, “What is critical literacy?” 4. Find an academic source that defines social justice. Use it to show how social justice is part of critical literacy. 5. Make an argument that one young adult title helps adolescents see the importance of social justice and critical literacy. 6. A major part of your grade will focus on how well you blend these three concepts and connect them to the young adult title of your choice. Make sure to use several examples from the young adult book to substantiate your arguments. These should take the form of paraphrased and quoted excerpts from the book. 7. Do not forget to conclude by demonstrating the “So what?” of your essay. In other words, a strong conclusion must return to the concept of adolescent identity formation. Show how reading this young adult title would positively affect a teen reader’s identity. 8. English education majors: Include an Appendix with no fewer than FIVE teaching activities to use with a grade level of your choice. For example, if you feel that your book would be appropriate for 8th graders, then create age appropriate activities that would help 8th graders read the novel from a critical perspective that enlargers their understanding of social justice and injustice. These assignments/activities can take the form of essay assignments, projects, speeches, blogs, etc. For each, include a brief 2 3 sentence explanation of how you would grade each assignment. Please keep in mind that Essay 1 will be submitted to Pass Port as you complete English 4843 and prepare for student teaching.
